EVERY MONDAY NIGHT -- The Hooliegans Traditional Irish Music Session takes place at Galloway Station Bar & Grill, 4211 S. Lone Pine in Springfield, Missouri. Music from 7:00pm till 9:00. The session is open to acoustic melody players familiar with traditional Irish music, so come to listen, or come to share some tunes.

The session was founded in April 2003 by whistle player John McHaffie and bodhran player Jeanette Beeman, and over the years has moved through a number of Springfield coffeehouse and bar venues. First was Churchill's Coffeehouse, where the session grew with the addition of a singer and hammered dulcimer player. The session moved on to the Magic Bean coffeehouse -- and really grew, with a couple of fiddlers, an uilleann piper, harmonica player and flute player joining the ranks. Mudhouse coffeehouse and Panera Bread Co. briefly hosted the session -- and saw the addition of two more fiddles, as well as flute, whistle, concertina, guitar -- and a step dancer!

The Hooliegans session finally found a permanent home at Galloway Station in 2006, and has had continued growth with new regulars, and numerous  guests and players from the area, and around the country. Nowadays, any Monday night might bring as many as 10-14 musicians to take part.  The usual instrumental line-up includes fiddles, flutes, tinwhistles, concertina, uilleann pipes, banjo, harmonica, guitars, mandolin, bouzouki, bodhran and  the occasional harp or stand-up bass.

The Hooliegans are not a performance band per se,  but they do sometimes "play out" away from the session environment. They've been known to add energy and fun to a wedding reception or other party, and were regulars for some years at the after-St.Pat's-Parade festivities in Springfield, MO. But the idea of the Hooliegans began as -- and has remained -- an informal, unstructured traditional Irish session: to share the music we love, to learn, to have fun. If you're in Springfield Missouri any Monday night, come on down to Galloway Station for some tunes.
