ABC2WIN, Music Notation Software 

Shareware program for writing, editing, playback and printing tunes by way of the relatively sophisticated but easy-to-learn ABC Notation system. Transcribe tunes and then print out standard sheet music; compose in ABC, and then listen to the result. An enjoyable and useful tool for trad musicians.

ABCMUS 

Shareware for playback of ABC tunes. Nicer sound, more variety of instrument voices than the built-in player of ABC2Win.

HENRIK NORBECK'S ABC TUNES - over 1600 traditional tunes in ABC notation. An excellent source.

An impressive comprehensive site, with information on the elements of traditional music, tunes, instruments, styles. A great background site.

CHRIS PETERSON'S TRAD MUSIC COLLECTION - Nice collection of many tunes --midi and sheet music.

Pages by the great Scottish singer/composer/guitarist; with a very nice collection of lyrics to trad. Scottish songs, links, rants, info.

DIRTY LINEN - American folk/Celtic/world music monthly magazine, with a sampling of each month's articles at its website.

Andrew Kuntz's very impressive long-term (since 1987!) project; tunes in ABC, with notations regarding history, sources, early printings, recorded versions, etc. A great informative site.

O'Neill's classic 1913 text about pipers and pipemaking, presented on Dublin pipemaker Bill Haneman's website.  Check out Bill's beautiful work while you're at his site.

THE HOOLIEGANS TRADITIONAL IRISH SESSION - Open session every Monday night, Galloway Station in Springfield, Missouri

A nice large list of standard session tunes, playable on the Noteworthy Player.

NOTEWORTHY NOTATION SOFTWARE A great notation and playback tool. Trial version available.

All-Ireland Champion flute and whistle player Turlach Boylan established The Kansas City School of Irish Music beginning with tinwhistle classes in Fall 2006. At the start of 2007 Dave Agee began to teach fiddle at the school. Weekday evening group classes are held in Union Station at the offices of the Kansas City Irish Cultural Center. Individual lessons on flute, tinwhistle and banjo are available.

Alan Ng's tunography. This is a large set of large lists and indexes. Not a source for tunes, per se, but a source for information ABOUT tunes. Excellent for alternative tune titles.

Vince Brennan's AMAZING project: the entirety of O'Neill's original book (the "1850") on the web -- in NOTEWORTHY, ABC, Sheet Music AND MIDI files! Incredible. A wonderful way to present O'Neill's in a way accessible to everyone. On the same site, he has similarly complete versions of  the classic Allen's Irish Fiddler, and the Complete Works of O'Carolan

A great general Irish music site, with a newsletter, a multitude of links, essays and articles about musicians and instruments.  A great site.

RAMBLING HOUSE IRISH MUSIC NEWSLETTER - good comprehensive online newsletter.

Mike Simpson's impressive site devoted to traditional music, with much emphasis on the tinwhistle. One of the best Tinwhistle Guides online, along with extensive tune archives (.gif/.jpg files & midi files), session listings, news and notes, reviews of recordings and instruments, players' directory.

Good source for tunes, in sheet music or abc format.  Searchable index, comments on tunes, listings of recorded sources, accepts tune contributions from members.

Excellent ,  searchable, huge database of tunes , in ABC, sheet music and MIDI formats.  A great source.

This is a lovely page devoted to the great Irish harper/composer, with midi files of many tunes, good background info on tunes, links to other sites on Carolan and the harp in general.

Website of the fine Irish flute maker MICHAEL CRONNOLLY, from County Mayo. Michael handcrafts  excellent affordable flutes of polymer or African blackwood. This is an interesting site with plenty of info about Michael's flutes and Irish flutes in general. "Gold Ring" host Lee Worman plays one of Michael's fine flutes, and highly recommends Cronnolly's work.

Celtic History / Culture

Breton site, with items for sale, and numerous links to Breton music, dance and culture. Many of the linked pages offer English translation.

The official Web site of the CCE, formed in 1951 to preserve and promote Irish tradition and culture. Comhaltas is the largest group involved in the preservation and promotion of Irish traditional music; a non-profit cultural movement with hundreds of local branches around the world.

DESMOND'S CONCISE HISTORY OF IRELAND - Basically a long online essay, very concise but very informative

A huge international Scottish community site, with sections on clans, history, tourism, business, webboards, shopping, links and an online magazine.

An excellent informative site for history of the Celtic peoples (with particular emphasis on the Scottish, Irish and Manx), language info, cultural materials, links.

As the introduction to the site says: "Irish History on the Web is NOT another 'links' page, but instead provides a unique resource for anyone interested in learning about or researching a wide variety of Irish history topics. Like a sourcebook, most of the links...will lead to primary documents, original essays, bibliographies or specific informational sites..."

St. Louis Irish Arts (SLIA) is the local branch of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, a worldwide organization founded in 1951 to preserve and promote Irish traditional music, song and dance. SLIA is one of the largest branches of CCE in North America, and currectly has the largest number of Junior members.
